Firefighters keep holiday tradition alive

Santa is getting ready for his ride around Jacksboro on the Jacksboro Fire Department’s 1946 Seagraves pumper truck. He and the firemen enjoy trying to visit everyone in Jacksboro on Christmas Eve handing out stockings filled with candy, fruit and nuts. 

The fire department gave 3,661 stockings last year to those who visited Santa on the streets of Jacksboro.

“We have a lot of people that travel from far away to see it every year,” Fireman Jason Jennings said. “It’s a pretty special thing that doesn’t happen in many places, nowhere that I know of really.”

Tips to keep Christmas shipping timely and safe

Christmas is fast approaching and the Jacksboro Post Office would like to remind those planning to ship packages of important postal deadlines.

The USPS ground delivery deadline is less than a week away on Thursday, Dec. 14 for contiguous U.S. The First Class deadline is Dec. 19.

Priority and Priority Express are Dec. 20 and 22, respectively.

Several military mail shipping dates have passed. Most addresses can still get their shipments if sent Priority or First Class by Dec. 11 or Priority Express Military Service by Dec. 16.

Airport improvements underway in Jacksboro

Construction is underway at the Jacksboro Municipal Airport to repair the facility’s asphalt pavement.

The pavement improvements are possible through $362,400 of funding approved through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program.

The City of Jacksboro has to kick in 10 percent matching on the project or about $36,000 to improve the runway, taxiway and apron.

Arrest made for child sexual assault

A former Bryson resident was arrested Nov. 2 in Wichita Falls on a warrant for sexual assault of child issued in Jack County.

Michael David Estep, 37, is now in the Jack County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

According to the arrest affidavit, a 15-year-old female victim was interviewed on Oct. 13 and stated she was 14 years old the first time Estep tried to have sex with her. 

Candidate filing underway

Candidate filing opens Saturday for the March 6, 2018 Primary Election.

Jack County offices up for election are district judge, district clerk, county judge, county clerk, county treasurer, justice of the peace and county commissioner­s for precincts 2 and 4.

Candidate filing runs from Nov. 11 through 6 p.m. Dec. 11.

County to 'rattle cages' for bids

County Commissioners will be going back out for bids for road materials and rock hauling after no bids were received.

During Monday’s regular meeting, Judge Mitchell Davenport said a request for bids had gone out in the paper but no bids were received.

“We normally don’t go out and rattle cages looking for bids,” Davenport said Tuesday. “We had a commissioner even call around during the meeting and he was told they didn’t see the request.”

Wise Hope hopes to raise DV awareness

Jacksboro will turn purple for another reason this month. The Wise Hope Shelter and Crisis Center is spreading purple ribbons and more as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Victim Advocate Karen VanderKaay said the Wise Hope Jacksboro Outreach office has much planned for the month including visiting the schools as part of the national campaign that began more than 30 years ago.

County judge announces retirement after 28 years

A fixture in Jack County politics for nearly 30 years, County Judge Mitchell Davenport announced Monday he will not be running for re-election.

Davenport has been county judge for 28 years, the longest serving judge in county history, and says retirement has been on his mind recently.

“I’ll be 71 next November and I was figuring that retirement and a social security check will be a pretty good raise,” Davenport said. “My wife is retired so that plays into it.”
