Work continues on Twin Lakes Activity Center

Wed, 12/23/2020 - 5:00 am

Improvements on the inside of Twin Lakes Activity Center continue with the hopes of some terrific announcements in 2021.

City Manager Mike Smith said with the hiring of Will Mangum as parks and recreation director, over the last six weeks plans for the center are being discussed. Before anything is finalized, money needs to come available. Smith told the council at their regular meeting this is a “30,000-foot vision of what is to come.

Mangum said the center has not been open over the last 9-10 months due to a number of issues. When the cleaning crew got in there to get things started on reopening, a number of spider webs were found and some of the equipment didn’t work.

One of the major fixes has been a leaky roof. The new P&R guy heard a new roof was needed but the hard-working Mangum has found otherwise.

“All you needed was an (Texas A&M) Aggie with a hammer and a screwdriver,” Mangum said with a chuckle. “I’m not saying I won’t find any other holes, but we haven’t had any more leaks in the times I’ve been working in there.”

Keeping someone at the facility during the day and evening is imperative. Security cameras have been repaired. Areas have been cleaned and are smelling great.

“”Change is happening. Our showers sound good." Mangum said.

Now that work on the centers begun a number of people say they’re willing to work out and have begun brining their friends. Mangum said he is very willing to work with the incoming Back to Space Program.

A big membership push is planned for the first the year. Right now, the facility has 17 members or folks that want to renew. Mangum said there has been no rate change in the last 9-10 years.

Gyms in the local area range from $35-65 a month. Mangum said if that’s the range being looked at, people will pay it.

“They’re looking for a quality, multi-function system,” Mangum said.

There are still many things in there works including developing more of a fishing lake, which he said he should learn more about this week. Mangum is also working with the State on developing 2-3 disc golf courses around the city.

A potential after school program next summer. This summer, if grants for improving the Lake Jacksboro shorelines can be obtained, developing a Movies on the Lake program has been discussed. Mangum said many of the ideas have come from the clients and are things they’d like to see.
