We've got spirit, yes we do!

Some of Jacksboro’s talented athletes competed along with thousands of others from across the Lone Star State last week and came out fourth in their division.

The Jacksboro High School varsity cheerleaders competed Thursday, Jan. 11 for their first time in the UIL Spirit State Championships held at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

The state competition is a 3-day event in which more than 500 teams and 10,000 participants compete.

The JHS squad finished fourth competing against 75 other teams. Teams compete in three categories: band dance, fight song, and crowd leading.

The University Interscholastic League introduced the spirit competition in the Spring of 2016. And again with the third season, the contest has grown.

The Texas competition focuses on cheerleader game day activities fans would see on the sidelines, unlike some cheer competitions which focus on high-flying stunts and lengthy choreographed routines. Each of the three categories of the UIL contest are timed at a minute.

Coach Jaci Pippen said JHS was 10th after the preliminary rounds but made a huge comeback to move up six spots finishing only one point behind third place.

“In the finals, we took the judges’ suggestions which got us to fourth,” said JHS cheerleader Hannah Herd.
