A Medical Air Rescue Company helicopter lands on Hwy. 380 W. to transport Ricky Don Broom to John Peter Smith Hospital following a head-on collision early Thursday evening.

Correction March 5, 2019: The previous version of this story incorrectly identified the medical helicopter company in the photo caption. We regret the error.

Two Jack County men were killed in a fatal wreck Thursday.

Jack County first responders were dispatched at 5:23 p.m. Feb. 28 to a head-on collision involving two vehicles on Highway 380 West between Bryson and Jacksboro just west of Chastain Road.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety press release, Dennis Bennett, 58, of Jacksboro, was traveling west driving a 2017 Honda CRV when the 2003 Ford F-150 extended cab pickup driven by Ricky Don Broom, 63, of Perrin, traveling east, crossed into the westbound lane.

“Unit 2 (Bennett) tried to make an evasive maneuver by driving into the right barrow ditch to avoid unit 1 (Broom’s truck),” the release read.

The truck crashed into the SUV in the ditch causing major damage.

Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Broom was transported by helicopter to John Peter Smith Hospital and died from his injuries at 6:55 p.m.

The crash is still under investigation.

Bennett served as superintendent of Jacksboro ISD for 13 years. He retired at the end of the  2015-16 school year after 27 years as an educator.

A memorial service for Bennett will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Jacksboro High School gym. Jacksboro schools will release at noon that day.
