Superintendent Milam to retire

Tue, 09/21/2021 - 3:49 pm

Jacksboro ISD Superintendent Dwain Milam has spent nearly every day since he was five years old going to school. That will end before the completion of this school year.

Milam announced his retirement after six years at JISD during a regular board meeting Sept. 13. He plans on staying through this spring when the board will hopefully have someone hired.

Milam says the decision comes with a lot of thought.

“I sought God’s guidance,” Milam said. “The decision was made with a lot of peace from God that it was indeed the right decision.”

He said he is confident the board will make the right decision on who they hire as they “are an outstanding group who care about the students and the staff.”

“I’ve been blessed with the family here at work,” Milam said. “We’ve worked together as a family since I’ve been here and they’ve all done a tremendous job.”

Milam noted the constraints COVID-19 put on the district the last two years. While the district was able to keep children healthy and safe, it did limit what he could do with the staff who did an outstanding job during the whole, according to Milam.

Milam decided to let the board know of his intentions early because he knew he would not be around for the next year.

“If I waited until January or February (to let them know of the retirement), their focus is on the next school year already,” Milam offered. “I didn’t think it was right to make decisions on a school year I would not be around for.”

Milam says he plans to remain here after retirement, as his wife Kristi will remain as the JISD Human Resources Director.

“We just love it here and will continue to be a part of the community,” Milam said.

Milam came to the district from Collinsville, where he spent seven years, six as superintendent.

The district held a special meeting Monday night to accept his resignation and begin the process of finding his replacement. No details from that meeting were available as of press time.
