Wed, 10/20/2021 - 10:40 am

A 48-year-old Jacksboro resident was found dead following a six-hour standoff the morning of Saturday, Oct. 16.

According to a press release, an officer from Jacksboro Police Department and a Jack County Sheriff’s Office deputy were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of W. Mesquite on a domestic disturbance call. During the assault, two females were able to escape from the residence and meet officers near the Jack County Memorial Park.

One female, Vanessa K. Massengale, 46, of Jacksboro, reported that she had been assaulted by her husband, Lewis E. Massengale II, 48, of Jacksboro.

She was transported to Faith Community Hospital and then airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where she was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.

Officers established a perimeter at the residence and attempted to make contact with Lewis, but were unsuccessful. Jacksboro Police Chief Scott Haynes made the call to bring in the Parker County Regional SWAT Team, made up of Parker County deputies and Weatherford Police officers, who arrived at 6:10 a.m.

The SWAT team also tried to make contact with Lewis, but with no success. The team entered the residence at 7:27 a.m. and found Lewis deceased.

Jack County Judge Keith Umphress pronounced Lewis dead and the body was transported to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy will be performed and cause of death determined.
