Springer hosts town hall meeting

Wed, 10/28/2020 - 5:00 am

State Senate candidate and present State Representative Drew Springer spoke to Jack County Republicans Oct. 12 on his candidacy.

Springer, who represents District 68 in the Legislature, is running for Pat Fallon’s District 30 seat in the Senate vs. Shelley Luther. The runoff date for that election is Dec. 19 with early voting Dec. 9.

District 30 serves all of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Erath, Grayson, Jack, Montague, Palo Pinto, Parker, Wichita, Wise and Young counties, and portions of Collin and Denton counties.

Springer said he appreciates the support that comes from the 2nd most “red” county in all of Texas in both races. Springer said he has been encouraged to spend more time on the Senate race.

The House race, Springer feels, balances on how the House will take care of an expected $4.6 million shortfall. Springer said using some of the rainy day fund would be a quick solution.

If the legislature used some of the rainy day fund, counties could avoid having to send DPS Sgts. and sheriff deputies to Austin to work law enforcement right now.

Springer also said much of the issue could have been alleviated is by calling in the legislature on a special session to discuss the declaration of a disaster because of COVID and law enforcement issues

“If things don’t improve dramatically within 7,14,or 21 days, declare a disaster and bring in the legislature,” Springer offered.

Springer offered helping small town business by having big boxes close and allowing small town business to open.

Springer is excited about the Senate race because the Senate sets so much more policy.

“In the House, you are on two committees,”Springer explained. “Here, you’re on five. People tend to listen in the Senate on what they’re doing and what Senators are doing. It’s much easier to be effective in the House.”
