Search for new JISD superintendent begins

Tue, 09/28/2021 - 9:27 am

By the end of January, Jacksboro ISD officials are hoping to have a new superintendent in place.

Dwain Milam announced his retirement at the Sept. 13 meeting after six years with the district. Milam has agreed to stay on until Feb. 28, depending on what the potential new hire requires.

“I’m good with either the end of January or end of February,” Milam said, during a special meeting held Sept. 20 to discuss the hiring process.

The board discussed using Region 9, a private firm or TASB as its search firm for Milam. Darren Francis with Region 9, which the district has used for its recent hires, came to discuss the process as a whole.

The advertising process will begin Oct. 1, with a screening of candidates to follow, and will remain open for at least six weeks. Francis said all candidates will be known by the district. Interviewing by the district is done once the final group of candidates is decided on.

A final candidate is then given a 21-day grace period before the board can approve the hire, Francis said. Region 9 works with TexasISD.com and the Texas School Administrators Association for its candidates. Francis said the district received between 45-50 applications during the last search and expects between 35-40 this time.

Before that, however, the district needs to work on a candidate profile what their candidate possesses and what they want to see in the person they hire. Francis says the his organization can help with that.

JISD board Vice President Ken Swan said the profile should be similar to the one the board submitted from its last search process.
