Parents, fans ready for HS sports

Wed, 07/29/2020 - 5:00 am

Without a shadow of doubt area parents are ready to get some local sports on the field and court.

July 21, the UIL announced all school in Classes 1A-4A could begin their practice and game schedules as normal, allowing them to begin play in August. For the larger schools, who won’t be starting until September which it seems like many of their schools’ academic year won’t either, it’s going to be a significant delay.

Fans will be allowed into facilities at 50 percent capacity and will be required to social distance and wear masks. Tickets may be required in some places and entry times staggered to avoid long waiting lines before events, namely in volleyball and football.

Parents are ready to go, including Perrin mom Jena Kovar who said the road back to normal begins right here.

“I’m ready. These players, coaches, schools & communities need their sports,” Kovar said. “We aren’t going to get back to “normal” if we don’t start somewhere. Sports might not be for all but for some of these kids it’s all they have.”

Joanne Sitton Holmes, a Perrin mom who has a senior, said she hopes the Pirates will be able to get a full season in. She says she will be going to all the games.

As any one enamored with the “Friday Night Lights” can tell you, it’s not just football but band and cheerleading as well that makes it special. After seeing her daughter missing Spring sports, Kristine Ryburn is ready to see her daughter on the court again and also as a cheerleader.

Echoing Kovar’s comments, Pat Pender said “We are so ready. We all need some NORMAL back in our lives. Our football player is about to bust, he’s so ready.”

Felecia Pennuell reminds fans not to forget about those who are coming up the ranks and aren’t in UIL sports yet who are also “so ready to play.”

Marlissa Newton said she has no trouble sending their kids and attending events.

“We don’t care if we have to suffer in a mask, anything to help our kids feel some normalcy again,” Newton stated.

Dhana Thornburg said she’s ready to go and “we can not live in fear.” Cindy Christian Hand said if we follow the rules and do what is best we can kick this virus out.”
