A Jacksboro teen was killed in an early morning accident near Mineral Wells Saturday.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Ricky Hunter reported that troopers investigated a one-vehicle crash on US Highway 281 near Oaks Crossing Road that killed 17-year-old Johnny Callan.

The crash occurred at 6:24 a.m. when a 2011 Chevrolet pickup traveling southbound on US 281, for an as yet undetermined reason, left the main traveled portion of the road, struck a concrete culvert and then a tree.

Callan was the sole occupant and was wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Palo Pinto Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Bobby Hart at 6:50 a.m.

Jacksboro High School students and some school faculty and administrators met at the ag building Saturday morning.

Grief counseling for students and community members was offered in the high school gym beginning at 1 p.m.
