Jacksboro Lions Club District club of the year

Wed, 05/05/2021 - 5:00 am

Jacksboro’s Lions Club received a distinct honor at its April 28 meeting.

District Governor Christina Schoonover presented the District Club of the year certificate to the club for their work outside the community, members bringing new members into the club and overall success.

Schoonover also presented awards to Tim and Donna Castle for their work along with Christine Castle who received the Governor’s Award and the International President’s certificate.

Speaking at the meeting was Terri Stretcher with the Jack County Child Welfare Board. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Stretcher read off some statistics concerning child abuse such as four kids die a week because of child abuse and a new abuse case being reported every 15 seconds nationally.

Stretcher said while the group’s focus is child abuse it helps others as well.

“We work with not only foster families but with folks who just need help,” Stretcher explained. “We’ve helped folks with graduation expenses when the foster couldn’t afford it. We had another young man who wanted to get his license and the family couldn’t afford it and he wanted to go out and get a job, so we helped with that.”

Stretcher urged anyone needing assistance to not hesitate if they are in need of assistance, saying board members have contacts and avenues to help people.

“We were expecting a lot of cases from COVID but we only ended up helping one or two people,” Stretcher explained. “To help with that we are always looking for cash, checks, and labor.”
