Jacksboro holds own vs. Class 4A Sanger

Wed, 08/26/2020 - 5:00 am

SANGER – With other states postponing football until Spring, it felt good for Jacksboro players and fans to see an actual scrimmage Thursday night here.

Tiger Coach Brannon Rodgers, normally a quiet, soft-spoken sort, was very pleased and excited about the two-hour scrimmage.

“The varsity looked very good in both of its drives and possessions,” Rodgers said. “It was good for the ‘D’ to get some stops against some good size kids.”

The format was like a normal scrimmage with two live quarters at the end. Rodgers admitted it was longer than he normally liked to go but with his first scrimmage being cancelled, it needed to be done.

“I was pleased with the first two drives of the quarters,” Rodgers said. “Their big offensive line and running back wore us down as things progressed, but we were able to get guys in who are reserves and see how they are going to get some meaningful minutes which they did.”

Jacksboro has been a ground gaining offense in Rodgers’ first three years at the helm, but even he contended things may change a bit this year.

“All groups threw the ball well,” Rodgers said. “That will be interesting to se how that helps us develop as the season progresses.”

Rodgers said there are something that will be easy fixes to work on.

“We need to have our offensive and defensive line, working on lining up correctly, but there are things that will get cleaned up as we move forward,” Rodgers said.

Jacksboro’s varsity will host Breckenridge Friday at 7:30 p.m. the JV Purple will travel to Breckenridge for a 6:30 p.m. Thursday kickoff while the JV White plays in Vernon Thursday at 6 p.m.
