Jacksboro, county come to terms on animals, road work

Wed, 10/07/2020 - 5:00 am

Jacksboro city council members approved a pair of interlocal agreements with Jack County Monday evening to make for a more cohesive relationship involving road work and animals.

City Manager Mike Smith told aldermen he was approached by County Judge Keith Umphress several weeks ago on working with the city on chip sealing with the projects down in Perrin and Wizard Wells. The county has the material but the city has the equipment to do it.

Smith said the county had helped the city on numerous occasions throughout the years on doing several types of jobs.

“They’ve helped us out, we help them out,” Smith explained. “It’s something we’ve talked about the need for and these resolutions would be a great way to start.”

The other project, Smith said, would be the county having brought several dogs in in recent months. The county has budgeted $20,000 for animal control in next year’s budget, which began Oct. 1. Smith said the county has purchased one cages to be able to transport animals in their own cars to shelter.

It will now cost county residents the same as city residents to get animals out of the city shelter but now county deputies can bring animals to the shelter instead of asking city officers to do it.
