Jacksboro aldermen discussing grass in the street

Wed, 01/20/2021 - 5:00 am

Aldermen here discussed what to do about a problem in with getting grass out of streets.

Residents have complained about homeowners mowing their lawns and blowing the clippings into the street. Once water gets on top of those it can cause damage to the streets.

Aldermen Joe Mitchell said that if lawns are mowed regularly, it’s not an issue. Many times, however, homeowners will let lawns go until grass is overgrown which is where the problems start.

City Manager Mike Smith said on some vacant lots by the time the landowner comes to mow, the grass can be two feet high.

Aldermen Craig Fenter suggested a educational program before coming down with more austere measures, which the council opted to do.

The council also honored former Alderman Marion Faye Lewis, who served from 2008- 13, and passed away recently. Josefina Esparza represented the family by accepting the proclamation which made Jan. 11, 2021 Marion Faye Lewis Day in the city.

In other news, the city has been working with the VISION group to add $25,000 for playground equipment to the Pine Street Park. Smith said it wasn’t in the Parks and Recreation Department budget but would be a simple in and out with VISION reimbursing the city money.

Ronald Fitzgerald was thanked for initially approaching the VISION group for the grant monies.

The council tabled an item on an landowner wanting his city taxes waived. The homeowner at 531 N. 3rd Street bought the land in February 2019 which had $2,487.40 of delinquent city taxes on it. The landowner, who has paid the taxes since he’s owned it, issuing the city to waive the city portion of the the taxes on it.
