Jacksboro to ditch recycling dumpsters
  •
This recycling dumpster located beside Mr. Cut Rate is one of five which will soon be replaced with regular dumpsters. Users are filling up the dumpsters with more than just recyclables.

The recycling bins in Jacksboro will soon disappear. City Manager Mike Smith reported the five bins located in town are being filled with nonrecyclable items.

“So when it gets to the recyclable yard, they say, ‘No, you’ve got to turn around and take that to the dump,’” Smith said. “So it’s costing Waste Connections quite a bit of money. What they asked is could we amend the contract so that rather than putting strictly recyclable bins in those five locations they just put trash bins for now.

“If and when the culture changes and people actually start recycling versus just throwing away their trash, then they would bring those recycle bins back. I didn’t see a problem with that. People are putting trash in them now. You can still put the recyclables in them, we just won’t have bins that are exclusive for recyclable.”

Council member Cade Cornish asked if there would still be somewhere available for those who want to recycle. The members and staff discussed ways to combat people putting trash with the recyclables. The bins are painted orange rather than the standard green and are marked with lists of what items are considered recyclable.

Smith proposed a possible locking dumpster located at city hall accessible during regular business hours.

In other business, council members voted down a request to allow for storage of vehicles and equipment on a lot at 115 E. Jasper St.
