Importance of Power of Attorney explained

Wed, 09/16/2020 - 12:00 am

Mike Mitchell learned about how important power of attorney can be.

The Jacksboro Lions Club President spoke to his fellow members after an experience involving a family member who didn’t have it and what they went through after an illness.

“He was careflighted to Fort Worth at a cost of $58,000,” Mitchell said of his brother-in-law Rodney.”You can get a year of insurance for you and the family for something like $150.”

After a few days in the hospital with no insurance he passed away. He had no power of attorney. Mitchell said if you have no idea of what a family member wants, go ahead and ask them.

“It will behoove you to ask them what they want to do,” Mitchell said.

Power of attorney gives legal authority for others to act in your name. It has limited purpose but there is no expiration date.

To act as power of attorney requires someone to be over the age of 18 and of sound mind.

“POAs do not tell you what to do, they ensure that what you want to do gets done,” Mitchell said. “Make sure it’s a person you trust when selecting one.”

Mitchell said it can be next of kin, be it a spouse, children, your parents. For more information on power of attorney, visit www.texaslawhelp.org of call 1-800-622-2520.

In other activity, Valerie Monk, Jacksboro Chamber Executive Director, was sworn in as a new member. Charlotte Haston received a Grass Roots Award from the District Committee as well.

She was supposed to received the award at the district meeting but that was cancelled due to COVID.
