Friends of the Animal Shelter have meeting

Wed, 08/05/2020 - 5:00 am

Members of the Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter met July 23 to determine what comes next after the passing of their long-time President and former Country Treasurer Kim Gibby.

Former Animal Control Officer Star Kinder was named the new president by acclimation. Some new rules were made and a date for a memorial service given for Gibby. Gibby’s service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8 at either 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. at Christian Missions Church where she attended.

Gibby was described as the organization’s “glue”, Kinder said. Kinder opted for any check or payment over $200, two officers must sign the check.

Kinder said the Jacksboro ISD Foundation recently donated $15,000 with another $10,000 grant to be used toward spaying and neutering.

The PETS program, used for spaying and neutering, is hoping to have a session later this Fall but not time has been set yet.

The Friends board also wanted to honor Gibby in a special way at the shelter. The Friends are hoping to buy a brick for a walkway scheduled for the new shelter or to possibly name a room at the new shelter for her.

People wanting to become a friend of the shelter can do so free of charge through January as all fees are being waived in an attempt to get more members. In another attempt to get more members, meeting times have been moved to 5 p.m.

Because of the memorial service, the next meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 6 at the fire station.
