County commissioners discuss sealing courthouse

Fri, 07/28/2017 - 5:08 pm

Jack County may spend from $68,000 to $85,000 to restore the exterior of the courthouse.

Judge Mitchell Davenport received a bid from Mid-Continental Restoration Co. to seal the exterior of the courthouse. He said for $68,000, the limestone would be sealed with a protective coating. An additional $6,000 would include the joints and $11,000 for the steps.

A similar restoration was performed 6 years ago and Pct. 4 Commissioner Terry Ward said it is recommended it be done every 7 years.

The money could come from the courthouse improvement fund of which Davenport said as of the end of fiscal year 2016 had $359,310 left from the bond issued 6 years ago borrowed for courthouse renovations. He said the bond would be paid in full this year.

“It’s kind of like painting your house. You’ve got to tend to it and if you don’t tend to it, you’ve got problems,” said Pct. 1 Commissioner Keith Umphress.

The commissioners also discussed using the remaining balance in the fund to pay the balance of the note. The item was tabled to be further discussed at a future meeting.
