Council honors youth with property saving action

Wed, 09/23/2020 - 5:00 am

Braytin Newsom was just taking out the trash one recent night when he saw something odd.

Smoke coming from a vacant residence across the street. He realized the house was vacant, investigating further and looked in a window where he saw flames.

He went into the house to notify his mom, who followed him outside to verify his claims of fire and immediately notified the fire department.

Newsom was honored by the Jacksboro City Council during its Sept. 14 meeting for his heroic actions. Mayor Alton Morris, Jr., was recognized with a certificate for his quick reaction and urged citizens to join in commanding Braytin for his deep concern for the welfare of others.

Newsom received copies of the recognition.

In other activity during the 40-minute meeting, the council approved Oct. 6 as it’s national Night Out Day at Jacksboro Middle School. It gives law enforcement and the community a chance to meet and discuss issues in a non-threatening area. With the COVID limit of 10 people in an area, the city had to give approval to let them have more.

The council also extended its depository agreement with Prosperity Bank for a one-year term. The original three-year term expired Sept. 30, 2019 with the possibility of three one-year renewals.

The council is considering shutting down the bulk water sale facility on the south side of town by the old theatre.

City Manager Mike Smith said the sales on the south side of town as opposed to the ones at the plant itself. When trucks come to buy water at the location it drops pressure around the area, Smith said.

Cassia Erwin and Joel Hood were named to vacancies to the Board of Zoning Adjustment.Cassia Erwin and Joel Erwin were elected full time and Tonya Smith was a parttime selection.
