Council agrees with Planning, Zoning on liquor store location

Tue, 02/21/2017 - 6:08 pm

The Jacksboro City Council went with the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation not to allow a liquor store locate on the downtown square.

At the regular council meeting Monday, a public hearing was held on the matter. There was no public comment.

“I’d like to see restaurants or more businesses that sell alcohol, but I don’t know that that’s the place for a liquor store,” said Councilman Gary Oliver.

Councilman Jason Nash said his only concern with not allowing a liquor store is that there are a lot of vacant buildings on the square.

“We’ve got structures that have nothing in them and we’re drawing no revenue. Other than that, I don’t think we’re large enough to have one on the square,” Nash said. “I don’t like the concept of having one in that close of a proximity of everything else that’s going on there.”

Council member Melanie Belcher said P&Z has worked hard to rework Jacksboro zoning.

“I think they know what they have in mind and we should go with their recommendation so they can move forward,” she said.
