City eyes block grant for streets

Thu, 08/17/2017 - 6:15 pm

The City of Jacksboro is likely to receive a more than $400,000 grant for street work soon.

City Manager Mike Smith reported at the city council regular meeting Monday that Jacksboro had been “tentatively approved” for a Community Development Block Grant.

“I feel confident we will be approved,” Smith told the council.

The grant requires the street improvements be made in lower income neighborhoods. Smith said the streets on the list are all south of West Belknap Street.

“We should start in Spring 2018 assuming everything goes the way we hope,” he said.

Smith also reported he met with representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation and Jack County concerning an overpass at the interesection of Highways 281 and 380 south of Jacksboro.

“That project is in the design phase and we looked at five different designs proposed. They were seeking local input,” he said. “I feel like between the city and the county we provided some.”

He added TxDOT works on a 2-year budget with this projected slated for the fiscal year 2019 budget to be implemented that year.
