Baseboard Battalion robotics team members Colt Kaker and Kobe Thomas demonstrate their team’s third place state robotics contest entry for school board members Monday.

Jacksboro ISD is moving forward with adding carpentry to its available career and technology education programs.

At the school board meeting Monday, Jacksboro High School Principal Brad Burnett reported several students will visit the North Texas Carpenters and Millworkers Training Center in Arlington Monday with Assistant Superintendent Wade Wesley.

Also as part of the field trip, the students will visit two cabinetmaking shops in Denton — Dozier Cabinets and Latham Stairs and Millworking, and tour Stiles Machinery in Coppell for an equipment demonstration and lunch.

The trip was offered to interested sophomores and juniors with 17 committed as of earlier this week.

Wesley said there will be a carpentry course offered for juniors and seniors in the upcoming school year.

“If there is a growing interest, more classes may be offered in the future,” he said. “The students will be able to earn credit and experience toward becoming a journeymen carpenter.”

Also at Monday’s meeting Superintendent Dwain Milam announced the district received a Texas Transparency Star from the Texas State Comptroller. The district received the recognition in the area of traditional finances for “outstanding efforts in making their spending and revenue information available” and for providing “easy online access to important financial data” read a statement from the comptroller’s office.

Local governments can apply for stars in the areas of traditional finance, contracts and procurement, economic development, public pensions and debt obligations, but must receive the initial star for traditional finances.

“That’s been a lot of work between Christy Milam, Christy Thomas and Helen Clayton,” the superintendent said. “We’re trying to put all that information out there. There’s no secrets we’re trying to hide in that regard. All that is on the website.”

Milam also presented a student opportunity report and said there are a total of 193 different extracurricular activities students may participate within offered by the district.

Those include 10 sports opportunities, four in band, 34 in FCCLA, 57 in FFA, four in robotics, 70 in FBLA, five for the Pan American Student Forum, two with theater, 34 academic UIL contests and seven clubs.

Milam said Jacksboro may not be competing in all of the available opportunities in any one school year. For example, there are 70 different FBLA competition possibilities, but those offerings are all available.

“That’s a lot of stuff for a kid, but also a lot for our staff to coach and train as well,” Milam said.
