BISD to improve track

Thu, 03/23/2017 - 2:38 pm

BRYSON –  School board members are looking into making drainage improvements at the football field.

The board brought in Jeff Jackson of Jackson Construction to speak at Monday night’s regular board meeting. Poor drainage is causing water during heavy rains to run across the track which is causing damage to the track. The current flow directs water south and west around the field house.

Jackson had two proposals for the board: one where catch basins and pumps are used to redirect water. Jackson said one inch of rain per hour, which does happen occasionally, will produce 12,700 gallons of water  whereas the multiple pumps Jackson proposed will move 100 gallons of water a minute.

The proposal will make for minor earthwork on both ends of the football field with a reshaping of the home parking area.

The second proposal will include concrete flatwork to help tie in with the existing slide area by the field house to direct water more to the north. The proposal will not affect parking.

The costs are within $1,000 of each other. Work is expected to take approximately 2-4 weeks and could begin as soon as April 13, which is the last day the track is scheduled to be used.

In other news during the 2 1/2 hour meeting:

The board approved the 2017-18 school year calendar which will have students dismissed at 2 p.m. every Friday to allow teachers to attend meetings and do work they may not otherwise be able to accomplish. School will begin Aug. 16 and be finished by Memorial Day, which the board had requested.
