4-H team speaks at Lions Club

Wed, 11/11/2020 - 5:00 am

Members of the JHS 4-H Agriculture Issues Team discussed modern issues of today’s farmer during Oct. 28’s meeting of the Jacksboro Lions Club.

The topic was the dissolution of 100,000 family farms since 2010. Four large corporations control most of their farms with three of them based in foreign countries.

The debate between the six young people involved whether the corporations were “Farmer Friendly or Corporate Corruption.” The pro side said foreign productions streamlines shipping, packaging and production, which can add 3-4 times to the cost. They also protect from non-meat based lobby its and provide endless job opportunities.

The anti side said the foreign conglomerate destroyed small producers, 80 percent are the small family farms. The majority of the farming bailouts fo to the foreign freeloaders.

After the discussion, Club President Mike Mitchell made the argument for the foreign freeloaders, saying these foreign companies can’t run 100 acres to pay for 7-8,000 more and expect to make a living.
