Don McAnear, Claude Herd, Floyd Easter and Bud Shoun play dominoes at Concerned Citizens. The men are looking to add a 42 game to the group.

A group of what Claude Herd refers to as “old codgers and ne’er do wells” is looking for some new members to take part in a century long tradition in Jacksboro.

Herd said the regular domino game that has been going on since anyone can remember has some extra slots to fill.

Herd has built two domino tables from angle iron and large tiles salvaged from the Gulf Station on North Main Street where the welding supply shop is now.

Now the group made up of six or seven members, which usually plays dominoes, has room to get a 42 game going.

“We play dominoes and I have asked guys to join us but they always ask if we play 42, but now we have this table,” Herd said.

The group which Concerned Citizen staff have dubbed the Domino Dudes, meets each weekday to play from 2-5 p.m. at Concerned Citizens.

“They give us a pitcher of tea and make us a pot of coffee and leave us leftover desserts. They take real good care of us,” Herd said.

Floyd Easter said the Jacksboro domino game has probably been going on for 100 years.
“We used to have a domino hall on South Main,” he said.

The current game has traveled around town a few places.

“We played in the motel behind the tire store, then George Moss had one at his filling station,” Herd said. “Then it was behind the hamburger stand but the heater went on the blink so we moved down here and we’ve been at Concerned Citizens for about a year.”

To join in a game, stop by Concerned Citizens after 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
