The Jacksboro Tigerette softball team was just a few inches away from taking a late lead in their quest for the school’s first softball playoff berth, but instead they will travel to Windthorst Monday for a one game playoff against City View.
The Tigerettes were trailing 9-8 in the top of the seventh; however, Laken Plaster was on second base and Samantha Pieper was on third when Harley Goodner hit a line drive that the Lady Bearcat shortstop leaped and snagged to end the game.
Laken Plaster pitched for the Tigerettes who held a 5-3 lead after three innings as Samantha Pieper ended the third inning by snagging a line drive at shortstop to end a threat by the lady Bearcats.
The Tigerettes started a two out rally in the fourth inning when Samantha Pieper and Laken Plaster singled. However, the inning ended when Goodner’s deep fly ball was hauled in for the third out.
A combination of Tigerette errors and Lady Bearcat hits in the bottom of the fourth inning led to four Henrietta runs and the Tigerettes found themselves trailing 7 to 5.
The Tigerettes were able to answer those runs in the top of the fifth as Lindsey Murphy walked and stole second base. Bea Toscano had an infield single moving Murphy to third where she was able to score on a wild pitch. Toscano came around to score on an infield single by Amber Pieper to tie the game at seven.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when Sam Pieper and Laken Plaster got on base and Lanna Plaster put the Tigerettes in front with a single that scored Pieper.
The Tigerettes threatened to score more but Murphy’s deep flyball was caught and after an infield single by Toscano loaded the bases, the Tigerettes were unable to score any more runs and they went into the top of the sixth with a 8-7 lead.
The Lady Bearcats started the bottom of the sixth with a bad hop single but the Tigerettes retired the next two hitters.
However, Henrietta had consecutive base hits to score two runs and take a one run lead into the seventh inning.
Darby Perry started the seventh inning with an infield single after a strikeout. She was out on a force play at second, leaving the Tigerttes with a runner at first, two outs and Laken Plaster at bat. With two strikes and the Tigerettes down to her last strike, she singled to move Pieper to third base. Goodner then scorched a line drive the was caught on a leaping play by the Lady Bearcat shortstop to end the game.
In other District action, Bowie completed their undefeated run through district with a win over City View and Holliday finished second with a victory over Nocona.
The Tigerettes will play City View in a one game playoff for third place at Windthorst Monday at 6.
