Four novices the Jack County political arena earned party nominations Tuesday night as balloting closed for the March 2 election.
Getting the nod from the Democrats in the Precinct 4 commissioner race was Bill Richardson with 56.2 percent of the ballots cast. He received 52 votes, compared to his opponent, Jimmy Riddle, who garnered 40. The Republicans chose Terry Ward over Ace Lowrance as candidate for Precinct 4 commissioner. With 56.3 percent of the vote, Ward beat out Lowrance at the polls, 134-104. Both candidates are grateful for the support they received. “I would like to thank Jimmy Riddle for running a good campaign,” Richardson said. “Thank you to all who voted for me, I look forward to the election in November.” “I appreciate the voter support and look forward to representing you in county government,” Ward said. Ward and Richardson will square off in the Nov. 2 General Election. James Brock won the Democratic nomination for Precinct 2 commissioner. He defeated Charles Anderson with 75.5 percent of the vote, 191-62. “I would like to thank all the voters who supported me and I look forward to running in November,” Brock said.
“I would also like to thank all the people ho passed out signs and cards for me,” he added. “If I didn’t have their help, I couldn’t have done it.” Brock will try to unseat incumbent Bryson Sewell in the General Election. Sewell ran unopposed on the GOP ticket. Running unopposed in the Republican Primary for County Treasurer was newcomer Kim Gibby. She will challenge incumbent Roger Sharp, who had no opponent on the Democratic side, in November. Claiming their party nominations and retaining their seats by acclamation were County Judge Mitchell Davenport and Justice of the Peace See PRIMARIES, Page 2 J. Nolan Dunlap, Democrats, along with County Clerk Shelly Clayton and District Clerk Tracie Pippin, Republicans. Also on the ballot were the county party chairmen, John Barry IV (Democrat) and Sharon Van Baale (Republican). Both ran unopposed. Turnout was fairly decent Tuesday, with 1,364 of the county’s 4,830 registered voters showing up at the polls. In the 2006 gubernatorial race, only 539 voters turned out. In Tuesday’s election, Republicans had the lion’s share of ballots cast at 926 compared to the Democrats’ 438. Local voters were right in line with statewide balloting in the highly contested governor races. Republican Rick Perry earned 56.2 percent of the Jack County vote, Kay Bailey Hutcheson 24.8 percent. Local Democrats cast 83.2 percent of their votes for Bill White; his nearest competitor, Farouk Sami, got 4.58 percent. The election results, provided by Elections Administrator Shelly Clayton, will not become official until canvassed by the Jack County Commissioners Court. |
