Mesquiteville on the Square offers a variety of venues for the community to participate with contests sure to please every palate.
Back again this year is the favorite Art and Photography Contest with viewing for the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, in the building which will be home to the new Eagle Title Company in Jacksboro. This year, event organizers have determined that a percentage of fees collected will go to winners in each age division and category.
Amateur artists, painters and photographers may showcase their work in four age divisions including Juniors (age 4-11), Intermediates (age 12-17), Adult (age 18+), and a separate division for Professionals. Entry fee is $5 for each entry, limit one entry per category. Art – Pen and ink, pencil, pater color, oil or acrylic, sculpture or 3-D, mixed media and scratch art. Photography – People, landscape, animals, black and white and Defining Jacksboro. Photographs and wall art entries must be at least 8”x10”, but no larger than 11”x14”, and mounted on a white background with a border of at least 1” on all sides. No frames will be allowed. All entries must be submitted with entry fee between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday, June 18, to contest headquarters at 101 E. Archer St. Doors will close at 6:30 p.m., when judging will begin. All entries will be on display to the public Saturday and ballots will be taken for a People’s Choice Award which will be revealed at 3 p.m.

Mesquiteville on the Square will also include a favorite contest – off the square – a bass fishing tournament on Lost Creek and Lake Jacksboro bright and early Saturday morning. First fisherman out at 6:30 a.m., weigh-in at 3 p.m. and participants do not need a boat to enter, but there will be no live bait fishing allowed for the purposes of this tournament. With entry fees set at $15 per person, the winner will walk away with 50 percent of the pot. Second place winner will receive 30 percent, third, 10 percent and 10 percent to the Biggest Bass caught. Participants may sign up the day of the tournament, but no personal checks will be accepted unless they register before Monday, June 14. There will be a limit of 20 boats for the tournament. “Only black, spotted or small- mouth Bass will be weighed-in,” said tournament chairman Jim Feltz, Jacksboro Parks and Recreation Department director. “Tournament fisherman are limited to using artificial lures only, but participants may fish in either lake.” In addition, all boat occupants must wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device and may only use one rod and reel at a time. Feltz reminds fishermen there is no trolling with the big motor allowed. Iced-down fish are not allowed and there will be a half-pound penalty for each and every dead fish brought to the weigh-in, which will be held at Twin Lakes Activity Center. “In order to qualify, all fish will be brought to weigh-in in a weigh bag with water at or before 3 p.m.,” said Feltz. “Also, we ask that fishermen be considerate of others. No contestants shall fish within casting distance of another contestant without their consent.” There is a five-fish limit and all ties will be split equally between the two respective entries. Feltz reminds any visitors to the lake that all federal, state and county game and safety laws must be observed at all times. The Jack County Museum will hold a Round Robin 42-Domino Tournament during this year’s Mesquiteville on the Square and they are looking for participants. Jacksboro National Bank has graciously offered use of their air-conditioned Community Room at 200 N. Church St. for use during the tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Entry forms and fees must be received by Thursday, June 17. They are available at Jacksboro Newspapers and the Jack County Texas AgriLife Extension Office, and may be mailed to Floyd Easter, 1644 Rumage Rd., Jacksboro, TX 76458. Individuals may enter with a $10 fee or $15 for a two-person team. Teams should check in between 8 and 8:30 a.m. the day of the tournament, Rules will be explained at 8:45 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place winners. Proceeds will benefit the Jack County Museum. Grab the ’shoes and a partner and sign up for the ever-popular Horseshoe Tournament at Mesquiteville on the Square. Entry fee is $10 per person and registration will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday on the courthouse lawn. Brackets will be drawn up and play will begin at 11 a.m. The tournament will last until a winner is determined. Cash prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishers. Cuddly canines – whether precocious pups or gangly giants – are all eligible to participate in the annual Mesquiteville on the Square Dog Show, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the main stage. Sponsored by Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter, there are five categories to enter – Costumed Canines, Hot Dog, Howlin’ Hounds and People & Pooches – where judges decide the best-dressed doggie, the doggie who shows off his or her best trick in 30 seconds, the doggie with the best vocal cords and the owner/pet best look-alike. Photo Pup will be determined by donations made throughout the day. To enter, submit a 5”x7” photo of your doggie with a completed application (available at Jacksboro Newspapers and the Jack County Texas AgriLife Extension Office) by 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 16. Festival-goers will submit “votes” for their favorites, and the pooch that collects the most money for the Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter will be the winner. There is a $5 fee for each entry. All dogs are required to be on a leash at all times. Handlers are responsible for any and all damages their dogs might incur and for cleaning up after their pets. Dog show participants and their handlers should assemble near the main stage by 1 p.m. in order to be assigned a number. Other contests include Baby Beautiful, Miss Mesquiteville, a bake-off, 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney, hot dog eating, bubble gum blowing, hula hoop, pie eating, roping and Mesquiteville’s Got Talent. Mesquiteville on the Square unoffocially opens at 5 p.m. Thursday, with wristband night at the carnival and the introduction of Miss Mesquiteville contestants. Opening ceremonies are Friday, with the start of the Emergency Cook-off and announcement of Miss Mesquiteville. Jacksboro Garden Club, which began the annual festival nearly a quarter century ago, will be the featured guest during opening ceremonies. At 6 p.m. the Clint Levi Band will take the main stage followed by the Matt Stapp Band at 9 p.m. Friday night’s festivities will wind down at midnight, and the fun begins again bright and early Saturday morning. |
