City to consider alcohol in parks

Thu, 01/12/2017 - 12:50 pm

Now that Jacksboro has allowed for the sale of alcohol, the city is considering whether or not alcoholic beverages will be allowed at public parks.

The council had a brief discussion on the matter during its regular meeting Monday.

City Manager Mike Smith sought guidance from the council as to their thoughts on alcohol consumption in public spaces. Some questions he asked them to consider included: Should it be allowed in general or be event driven? What defines an event? Does the city want to segregate where alcohol can be consumed within parks or regulate types of containers?

He mentioned concerns of liability insurance and whether or not the event is public or private. If the city wants to allow alcohol sales at an event such as TNT Fest, will it contract the service out or get the permit and have city staff sell it? Will patrons be allowed to bring their own coolers or only be allowed to consume what is bought at the location?

There are also matters of security.

Mayor Alton Morris suggested the council members look into the matter further.
