Perrin-Whitt Consolidated Independent School District class of 2014 held its graduation ceremony Friday evening. Twenty-two students graduated Friday night in the ceremony held in the high school gymnasium. The gym was packed with family and friends of the graduating class as well as faculty and staff.
As the music began, each student walked in one at a time as their names were called and walked down the carpeted runway which they proceeded down until gathering together in front, facing the audience.
The students were congratulated with their motto on the front of the program which read “You dreamt, you strived and you are there. Congratulations.
Jacob Rice, salutatorian, started the graduation ceremony with a humorous speech which he kicked off by taking a “selfie” of himself standing at the podium. His advice to his fellow classmates continued on with humorous twists and also heartfelt advice.
“We must be like a big beautiful bird and soar into tomorrow,” Rice said. “Always be honest because honesty is worth more than a mountain of gold. Never be less than you deserve. Don’t let anyone decide that for you. We aren’t saying good-bye, we’re just accepting this challenge laid before us called life.”
Rice plans to major in mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. Rice has been a student of Perrin since kindergarten with the exception of a few years in between.
