Dr. Jed Griesel spoke to the Ladies of Faith audience Sept. 16 at their monthly meeting.
They meet at the Concerned Citizens Center and dinner is provided.
Griesel spoke to the ladies about thyroid disease and women's health.
He explained that the thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland, about 6 centimeters wide, which lies low in the front of the neck, just below the larynx.
It is the only organ that concentrates iodine and it makes protein called thyroglobuin, which is in control of growth and development. The heart, skeleton, brain and developing fetus all respond to thyroid hormone, with thyroid disease causing increase in heart problems and osteoporosis.
He also taught that the incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing, but treatable.
Thyroid disease is common but often not diagnosed. Due to varying rating charts, may thyroid issues are not targeted.
About 50 ladies enjoyed the meeting. They will meet again Oct. 21 to hear about breast health awareness.
