Beginning to feel like home

Garden Club Vice President Melinda Perkins (left) and Gayle Burleson presents an orchid to Russonna Jones-Briscoe of the Concerned Citizens Center. The Garden Club holds monthly meetings at the center each second Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and all are invited to join and grow with the Garden Club.

JC sales tax revenue continues to increase

Bryson receives $4,817.33, an 18.65 percent increase from last year and Jacksboro followed with a 24.78 percent increase receiving $84,622.22 in sales tax revenue in January. These sales tax checks reflect sales occuring in November and revenue recorded in December after sales reports were sent to the state. The county total was $89,439.55 reflecting a 24.43 percent increase from last years total of $71,875.79.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced today that state sales tax revenue in December was $1.98 billion, up 9.5 percent compared to December 2010.

JFD Fire Department to hold Chili Cook-Off

The Jacksboro Fire Department will host a department fundraiser Saturday, March 10 at the Jack County Fair Grounds.
Meal tickets are $10 per person and that gets you in to the dance as well.
Entry into the dance without the meal ticket will be $15. Raffle tickets are also being sold at $10 each for chances on a rifle, gun safe, and a deer blind that night.
Your raffle ticket also gets you in free to the dance Friday night.
The Chili Cook off will be held Saturday, and we will be trying to break a world record that day.

Geer mourning After the fatal accident of a fellow trucker at Geer Tank Trucks Monday, employees mourned the death of Rodney Ashinhurst. (Photo by Shelly Pope) At approximately 8:30 Monday morning sirens could be heard all over town. An accident at Geer Tank Trucks drew response from the Jacksboro Fire Department, Jacksboro Police Department and EMS.
Geer Tank Trucks, Inc. employee and long time Jacksboro resident, Rodney Ashinhurst, fell victim to a fatal accident involving the power take off (PTO) driveshaft of his truck.
“He had a hose hooked to the frac tank,” investigating Jacksboro Police Leiutenant Jeremy Clayton explained.
In order to pull water from the tank or from the truck, the pump on the truck must be engaged.

CARLY MAHONEY Two Jacksboro High School seniors, Carly Mahoney and Bre Cathey, received All-State academic honors for the 2011 volleyball season.
Players must maintain an overall grade point average of 94 or above during grades nine through 11 to receive this honor.
Mahoney plans to attend Texas A & M University in the fall and major in engineering. She is the daughter of Mitch and Robin Mahoney.

The eighth grade Tigers lose a tough game to Archer City with a score of 37 to 38 with Caleb Martin leading the scoring with 17 points.
The remaining points were tallied by Kole Vedder with 10 points, which included two three pointers; Pedro Ibarra with six points and Colten Massengale and Billy Hamman scored two points each.

Mr. and Mrs. James Beitel of Joplin and Ms. Lisa Cantwell of Graham are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Dawn Beitel of Perrin to David Curtis Hamilton of Perrin.The bride-elect is a 2008 graduate of Perrin High School and attended Weatherford College for three years.
The prospective groom is the son of David and Minnie Hamilton of Perrin. He is a 2000 graduate of Perrin High School.

Foxes celebrate golden anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fox of Graham celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 16, 2011. The couple’s family hosted a party in their honor at the Wildcatter Ranch.
Entertainment for the evening was hosted by the couples grandson, Brent Fox, who played his guitar and sang.
The couple have three children: James Fox and wife Kim of Hamlen; Debra Leverton and husband Richard of Versailles; and Jerry Fox of Graham.
They have seven grandchildren: Lindsey Fox and friend Nick Joy; Brent Fox; Dean Leverton; Samantha Leverton; Anna Marie Leverton; Savannah Fox; and Casey Fox.

Mike and Rhonda Mitchell celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Saturday, Jan. 7 with a surprise party thrown by their children.
Friends and family celebrated with the couple with a dinner catered by Dairy Land Drive-In and entertainment provided by Frank James and the Hired Guns.

LUTHER PRUNTY Luther Prunty, Jacksboro High School’s oldest living graduate, will turn 100 Jan. 11.
The community is invited to his 100th birthday party celebration from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Saturday, at the First National Bank Scarborough Center. The cake will be cut at 3 p.m.
Prunty was born in a log cabin near Cundiff in East Jack County in 1912. There was a raging snowstorm, which prevented the Jacksboro doctor from hitching up his team to come for the delivery.

Jack County Relay for Life Committee will host a ‘Kick-Off Rally’ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday at the Twin Lakes Activity Center.
This would be a great time for survivors, caregivers and teams to register and to purchase luminarias.
There will be free hot dogs and door prizes. Come out and support this great cause.
Relay for Life is an opportunity for everyone, as a community, to gather where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a Read More...
