A shooting was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m. today, Monday, at a house located behind the Live Oak Vet Clinic. Jack County Sheriff Department, Faith Community Hospital EMS, Jack County Rural Fire Departments and Jacksboro Fire Dept responded.
The injured person was evacuated by helicopter from the scene.
Update: At 12:40 p.m. Jacksboro newspapers received information from John Peter Smith Hospital staff.
It was reported that veterinarian Greg West is in critical condition with the trauma team in the ICU unit of the hospital.
10:15 a.m. Tuesday - Staff at John Peter Smith Hospital reported that West was still in critical condition.
5:05 p.m. Tuesday - Jack County Sheriff Melvin Mayo said West's gunshot wound was self-inflicted and he suffered from brain trauma.
He added that his thoughts are with the family.
"It's a tragedy to the family and to the community," Mayo said. "Things like that happen and we can't explain why. We don't know. We're still traumatized by it and we're going to do what we can do to give the family some peace and the respect that they deserve."
8:55 a.m. Wednesday - JPS has confirmed that West is still listed as being in critical condition.
