In the three years since he took over the helm of the girl’s softball program at Jacksboro, Head Coach Lloyd Vedder has taken a program that had never won a district game to the state playoffs.
After the disappointment of dropping Friday’s game at Henrietta, the Tigerettes bounced back to defeat the City View Lady Mustangs 9-2 in a one game playoff for third place at Windthorst Monday evening.
Senior Laken Plaster led the way for the Tigerettes as she earned the victory with seven strong innings against City View. Laken also figured heavily into the offensive success of the Tigerettes with two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
The game started as a pitcher’s duel, as the contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Jacksboro was able to play “small ball” and aggressively force the issue on the base paths which forced some mistakes by the Lady Mustangs and led to five runs for the Tigerettes in the bottom of the third inning.
After Plaster shut down the Lady Mustangs once again in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigerettes continued their offensive onslaught with four more runs in the bottom of the  fourth inning to put the game away.
The Tigerettes finished the game with sixteen hits. They were led by Amber Pieper with three hits. Harley Goodner, Laken Plaster and Darby Perry each had two hits for the Tigerettes who finish the season with an overall record of 11-13 and a district record of 5-6.
Coach Vedder described the win as “great for the girls.”
“I feel so blessed that they will get the opportunity at the post season.”
The post season will come quickly for the Tigerettes in what will be a very busy weekend for the softball team. Jacksboro will take on Comanche in a Bi-District Championship best of three series.
Game One will be played Friday night at 7:30 in Albany.
Game two will take place Saturday morning at 10:30 in Eastland.
If necessary, game three will be played Monday at Mineral Wells at a time to be determined.
Tickets at the gate are $3 for adults and $2 for the children.
Creativity was necessary in the weekend schedule as Senior pitcher Laken Plaster will be competing in Odessa at the Regional Shot Put competition Friday and the Jacksboro High School prom will be Saturday night.
